BCST is a gentle, non-invasive therapeutic approach that works with the body’s subtle rhythms and natural healing processes. The light-touch modality focuses on supporting the nervous system and the craniosacral system (the membranes and cerebrospinal fluid that surround and protect the brain and spinal cord). By sensing and working with the inherent movement of these fluids and tissues, BCST encourages the body’s innate capacity to self-regulate, balance, and reorganise.
Yes, BCST is an extremely gentle and non-invasive approach.
It is suitable for people of all ages - from newborns, during pregnancy through to children, adolescents, and older adults - and can be safely used alongside most medical treatments and wellness therapies.
Because the touch is light and non-manipulative, and the approach follows the body’s natural rhythms rather than applying force or external pressure, the risk of adverse effects is very low.
At times, emotional responses may arise. If this happens, your practitioner will support you with a calm and attentive presence, helping you to feel safe and not over-whelmed. Your system guides the process, with any shifts coming from within, at a pace that feels comfortable for you. (http://with.no)
Importantly, it is not necessary to revisit or relive past experiences for changes to occur. The work supports your system to feel resourced and safe, allowing held tension or emotion to release naturally when ready.
If you have any questions, you are welcome to contact your Craniosacral practitioner to discuss if BCST is right for you or your loved one. If you are unsure, you may also wish to consult your GP or healthcare provider.

BCST works gently with the whole body, supporting the nervous system and facilitating balance across physical, emotional, and mental layers. Because of its subtle, non-invasive nature, it is considered a safe and supportive approach for many people and conditions.
It is also well suited for those wishing to maintain and enhance overall wellbeing, deepen their connection to themselves, and cultivate a greater sense of ease, embodiment, and wholeness.
During a session, the client lays fully clothed on a treatment table. Small children may prefer to play on the floor or read with a parent or the practitioner. Once the client is comfortably settled, and consent is gained, the therapist will place their hands lightly upon the client's feet, spine, shoulders, head or other regions - using a very light, attentive touch to attune to the craniosacral rhythm. This rhythm is the subtle expansion and contraction caused by fluctuations in cerebrospinal fluid and tissue motion. The therapist tunes into, and palpates, these natural rhythms, helping the body release tension and restrictions at a deep, physiological level.
The experience is usually deeply calming and clients may experience an increased internal awareness or feelings of temperature change, flow, tingling, release, expansion and deep relaxation. BCST recognises the interconnectedness of emotional, mental, physical, and spiritual aspects of every individual. Every session is customised to suit the individual needs of the client.
Preparing for a BCST session is simple.
If possible, wear comfortable, loose-fitting clothing and allow yourself enough time to arrive relaxed and unhurried.
Ideally, avoid heavy meals or intense physical activity right before your appointment to allow your body to relax fully during the session.
Coming with readiness to connect with your innate health, and a gentle curiosity, can help you get the most from your experience, supporting your body’s natural ability to restore balance and wellbeing.
Most people feel a deep sense of relaxation and stillness during a session. You may notice sensations such as gentle warmth, soft pulsing, tingling, or a feeling of spaciousness in the body. Some people experience a light floating sensation or feel as though they’re in a meditative or dreamlike state, and at times clients may not sense anything other than restfulness - all are normal..
Each person’s experience is unique - some sessions may feel physically restorative, while others feel more emotionally expressive, or energetically calming. As the therapeutic touch is light and still, it's okay to feel very little occurring, changes can be very subtle.
Whatever arises, your body sets the pace, and the therapist will gently support a safe space where your system can settle, resource, reorganise and self-regulate in it's own sequence and manner.
Adults: Allow 60 minutes for your appointment
Teenagers: Allow 45-60 minutes
Children and babies: Allow 30-40 minutes
There is often a short check-in / chat at the beginning of a session prior to getting on the table - and again at the end to discuss how the session felt and anything noticed. Commonly, this is 5-10 minutes total, and is included in the above mentioned timings.
Initial Session
Please allow an additional 10-15 minutes for your initial appointment, this is an opportunity for you to share how your health is and what you may hope to gain from the treatment. It is also a great time to mention any health objectives / any areas of concern / medical conditions, or to discuss any queries you may have.
BCST primarily works with the craniosacral system, which includes the membranes (meninges) surrounding the brain and spinal cord and the cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) that cushions and nourishes these structures. By supporting the free flow of CSF and releasing restrictions in the membranes and connective tissues, BCST can positively affect the central nervous system, autonomic nervous system (balancing sympathetic and parasympathetic functions), musculoskeletal system, and even vascular and lymphatic circulation. This holistic influence supports improved neural function, tissue health, and overall homeostasis.
As BCST works with the whole person, it can have a positive influence upon all systems of the body.
Yes, Biodynamic Craniosacral Therapy (BCST) offers both physiological and holistic benefits. On a physical level, it gently supports the body's natural healing systems - especially the craniosacral and nervous systems - helping to relieve tension, improve fluid circulation (like cerebrospinal fluid), and support overall nervous system balance. This can lead to reduced pain, better sleep, improved digestion, and a calmer stress response.
At the same time, BCST works holistically by addressing the whole person, not just symptoms. The therapy encourages deep relaxation and stillness, which can allow emotional patterns, mental stress, and unresolved trauma to gently surface and release. Many clients describe feeling more emotionally centered, mentally clear, and embodied after sessions.
Because of this dual effect, BCST is an ideal therapy for those seeking both physical relief and deeper emotional or energetic support - offering a truly integrative path to healing and wellbeing.
BCST promotes balance in the autonomic nervous system, which controls involuntary bodily functions like heart rate, digestion, and breathing. By enhancing parasympathetic (rest-and-digest) activity and reducing sympathetic (fight-or-flight) dominance, BCST helps the body move out of stress responses into states of relaxation and healing. This can improve emotional regulation, reduce pain perception, and support better sleep and immune function.
The term Primary Respiration refers to a subtle, rhythmic movement inherent to the body’s living tissues and fluids, independent of breathing or heartbeat. This slow, wave-like motion reflects the vitality and self-regulating capacity of the whole body system. In BCST, therapists learn to perceive and support this movement, which is understood to facilitate deep tissue health, fluid balance, and nervous system regulation.
After a session, many people feel deeply relaxed, calm, and more connected to their body. You may notice reduced pain or tension, improved sleep, or a sense of emotional lightness. Some clients feel energised and clear-headed, while others feel quiet and reflective, both are completely normal.
Changes can be immediate or unfold gradually over the following days as your body, mind, and energetic self continues to process and integrate the work.
Occasionally, stored emotions or physical sensations may briefly arise as part of the body’s natural healing response. This is usually short-lived and can be a sign that your system is reorganising in a healthier way.
Everyone responds differently, but most leave feeling more balanced, centered, and grounded.
After your session, and for several days following, it's important to stay hydrated, rest if needed, and listen to your body. Taking time to integrate the experience gives your system the space and support it needs to fully benefit from the session.
Trust your body’s wisdom, it knows how to guide your healing from within. Take time to care for yourself, and do the things you enjoy in the hours and days following a session.
The number of sessions varies based on your individual needs and health goals. Some people notice improvements after a single session, while others benefit from a series of sessions to facilitate deeper physical, emotional, or energetic release and rebalancing. It is often beneficial to have 3-4 sequential weekly (or fortnightly) sessions with complex conditions. Such situations often benefit from layered treatment sessions to support comfortably paced unravelling, with time for adequate resourcing and integration throughout.
Yes, absolutely.
BCST complements a wide range of therapies, including physical therapy, massage, osteopathy, psychotherapy, chiropractic care, traditional Chinese medicine, and conventional medicine. It may enhance the effectiveness of these approaches by promoting relaxation and reducing bodily tension.
